One bite from the Widow and you’ll be hypnotized, it’s 100% Zin from a parcel of gnarly old vines planted in 1965 that produces a mere ton of fruit per acre, which is nothing! Just in time for our summer BBQ's. Our very first Back Widow was produced from a vineyard very near this one when our winemaker was bitten by a Black Widow at the sorting table - it hasn't happened again since, but when we can produce a rich, decadent, deep and burly Zin like this one, we know it's the Black Widow. The grapes fully ripen thanks to the weather but the thin sandy soils bring balance and complexity, all without over-the-top alcohol levels. And to make sure the harvest was perfect we picked at night and did everything by hand. The result is all the classic bold Zinfandel style you can handle, a million shades of spice and briary fruit with a sweet, luscious tannin and velvety mouthfeel.
The nose delivers a little bit of everything – cherry cola, freshly ground pepper, dark berries, and nuances of smoky caramel. Then the palate takes you on a joyride of deep, juicy fruit-driven flavors on the back of a smooth velvety tannin structure. I get all kinds of boysenberry, blackberry, and blueberry that slowly melt away to show nuances of grilled herbs, soil and spice through the finish. Perfect for a smoked brisket, grilled steak or pork, or even a spicy pollo asado - it's grill, baby, grill with this one!
